When I first set sail with Viking Cruises on the Paris & the Heart of Normandy itinerary, I knew I was in for something special. But nothing could have prepared me for the perfect blend of history, culture, and unforgettable moments I experienced along the Seine. From standing on the sands of Normandy to watching the Eiffel Tower shimmer at night, every day brought something new—and something truly moving.

First Impressions: Life On Board Viking

I sailed solo and stayed in a Standard Stateroom, or what I affectionately call the “Swan view.” It was cozy at 150 square feet, but for one person, it was just right. There was plenty of storage space, and I especially appreciated thoughtful details like the heated bathroom floor, soft under-sink lighting, and a mix of 110/220 outlets and USB-C ports—a modern traveler's dream.

The Wi-Fi worked great, which was perfect for sharing photos and keeping in touch. I took full advantage of the lovely weather by dining outside on the Aquavit Terrace—a wonderful perk of the ship. And let me tell you, Viking’s staff went above and beyond. From catering to dietary needs to sending us off each morning with a smile and bottled water, they made every moment feel like coming “home.”

One of the most memorable evenings was after our long and emotional day visiting the Normandy beaches. That night, a talented duo called Da Capo performed WWII-era classics in the lounge—it was the perfect way to reflect and unwind.

Exploring France: My Favorite Stops

  • Normandy Beaches: A Powerful Tribute

One of the main reasons I chose this itinerary was to pay tribute to those who fought and died for our freedom. Visiting the Normandy beaches and the American Cemetery was incredibly emotional and humbling. It was a long day, but deeply meaningful—an experience I’ll never forget.

  • Paris: A Night to Remember

On our final evening, I took a Seine River cruise excursion, sailing past the Eiffel Tower and watching it light up and sparkle. At 11:00 p.m., the riverbanks were still alive with music, dancing, and joy. The Eiffel Tower glimmering against the night sky? Absolutely magical.

  • Giverny: Stepping Into Monet’s Masterpieces

Visiting Claude Monet’s house and gardens in Giverny felt like walking into one of his paintings. The water lilies, the iconic green bridge, the light—every detail was just as he had captured it on canvas. It’s a must for any art lover or anyone looking to experience the peaceful charm of the French countryside.

  • Rouen & Les Andelys: Charming and Full of Character

In Rouen, the Gothic architecture is striking, and the stories of Joan of Arc give the town a powerful sense of place. And Les Andelys, a smaller town along the river, completely stole my heart with its fairytale streets and riverside beauty.

Who Should Consider This Cruise?

I’d say the average age onboard was about 75, and the pace was relaxed—a perfect fit if you enjoy unhurried travel with plenty of time to soak in your surroundings. Personally, I was thrilled to sneak in a few afternoon naps and take in the scenery from the lounge or the sun deck.

A Few Travel Tips

Good walking shoes are a must! Between cobblestones, uneven terrain, and long days on your feet, comfort is key.

Be prepared for some unusual ship-to-shore access—we occasionally had to walk over another docked ship to get to land, so a bit of flexibility is helpful.

Take your time and soak it all in. This trip is not about rushing—it's about savoring every detail.

Final Thoughts

From the moment I stepped aboard to the final glittering views of Paris, my Viking river cruise was a blend of history, serenity, and connection. Whether you’re paying tribute on the Normandy coast, standing in the garden that inspired Impressionist masterpieces, or sipping wine on the Aquavit Terrace, this itinerary offers something unforgettable at every turn.

If you're looking for a journey that touches your heart, feeds your curiosity, and lets you explore France at a gentle pace, I can’t recommend Paris & the Heart of Normandy enough.
