What were your favorite destinations?
Sitka was my favorite because it is a smaller city with fewer cruise ships in port and a beautiful National Park with “Totem Forest.” “Totem Forest” has an extensive collection of totem poles along the walking trails within the park.
Did you go on any special excursions or side-trips?
In Sitka we did the “artist Walk with Italian Glass Pulling Studio.” I found this very interesting, different and fun. Each person was able to actually “pull” the hot glass to create our own work of art. The piece was sent to our homes so that we wouldn’t have to transport the fragile items.
What are your top three pieces of advice for someone going on a similar trip?
- Be ready for all kinds of weather…rain, sun, snow, wind, fog, haze and mist, possibly all in 1 day!
- Dress in layers. Bring a hooded jacket. Although the ship will provide umbrellas to use in port.
- Alaska sightseeing is more “natural history.” There are not big cities with cathedrals, museums or dining experiences. The objective is to view the wildlife, the glaciers, the mountain ranges and scenery.
Have you been to this destination before, or would ou want to come back again? Why?
Yes, I’ve been to Alaska four times, by land, by cruise ship and by small ship. I would not return only because I feel I have done and seen all I want and need. However, one never knows in our industry.
Do you have any upcoming trips that you are excited about?
I am going to China in November, a Caribbean cruise for Christmas, South Africa in March, and a cruise from London to Lisbon in September. A lot of great destinations and opportunities in my future!
